Curiosity. Suppose a 24/7 mission-critical system needed to evolve to handle new business requirements. For these new requirements, the existing data needs to be transformed in such a way as to preserve its integrity and allow the data to serve as the foundation for new data. Note that the system is a 24/7 and that data is being updated potentially every second of the day. As part of the transformation, scrubbing of the data is potentially necessary to address problems that have arisen over time. So, what would be necessary to effect the evolution of the system?
Invention. A way to solve this is to envision an assembly line where the data from the existing database are the raw materials and the new database a finished product. The assembly line would then need to be constructed in such a way as to handle the time component that is an intrinsic part of the data in addition to the scrubbing. Consider the diagram an assembly line. Now plug-in the various technologies of today to implement the different pieces of the assembly line. What would it look like to you and how would you control the operation of the assembly line?
