Curiosity. Scientists on a  mission need to observe a video stream in real-time as they explore the environment. During the mission, they need a quick way to annotate their observations so that they can analyze later in the laboratory. A previous method of typing in annotations resulted in spelling errors, inconsistent cataloging of observations, and too much time taken away from the exploration. So, what type of interface can facilitate real-time annotation?

Invention.VICKI, a real-time distributed video annotation system was devised to streamline the man-machine interaction. The approach entails the use of an on-screen keyboard with different panels for each type of mission that allows the scientist to annotate the video with one, two, or three clicks at the most. With the annotation, the time-code is also captured to allow correlation with all of the other data that is captured during the exploration. Implementation. Smalltalk, X-Windows, and C++ implementation running on Windows, Macintosh, IRIX, and HP-UX connected to the video camera and the network time-code generator.
